Liver & Onions

October 25, 2019 Off By Jim Walker

Well today’s the day, I’ll be heading over to the Dr this afternoon. I’m sure I’ll report on the consultation later in the day. Positive or negative…just the facts….(Sounds like Dragnet). Going to this Dr appointment is kinda like having liver and onions for dinner…. you know it’s good for you but it tastes like crap. But your hungry so….no options. Hopefully that makes sense….=)

I was thinking back when I mentioned my “Theatrical Expertise”, that Coach Olmedo, Coach Haugh and myself were in the school play together, The Man Who Came to Dinner. I played the intelligent, humorous, good looking main character Sheridan Whiteside and Miguel and Kevin were bumbling prison guards. This was first time I saw Type casting used so effectively. =)  Seriously tho,  this was such a fun memory. We laughed so hard during rehearsals. A blooper clip would have made millions. =)

In the past few days, I’ve had a ton of calls and messages from past coaches that I worked with over the years. I’m humbled by their comments and good thoughts.  Many of the conversations trended to all the great times we had together. My thoughts on a staff is this, the athletes come and go but the staff is there for the long haul. I always emphasized that the staff and their families were in this together. In rough seas or calm tides, we were the only ones in the boat. I think the first priority for any head coach is on-campus coaches/teachers. Good quality coaches are great teachers, it goes hand in hand. This is not saying off campus guys are bad because I had some good one’s as well. It’s just creates better chemistry when the athletes can see their coaches in the school surroundings all day. Good coaches are more important than new uniforms or “bling bling” spirit packs. And let me be clear, if an administration doesn’t support the HC in getting on-campus help, it’s time to turn in your keys. You can’t get it done by yourself, period! Plus it only hurts the athletes when there are no quality coaches on staff. I was blessed to have some incredible men and strong role models on my staffs. They made my job easy! “Here endeth the lesson”…..=)…(Sean Connery in The Untouchables)

I did make a list of all the questions I need answered by the doctor. I used large print so I could read them. =) It reminded me of the time I printed out my game plan in #5 font, so I could fit it all on one page. Boy was I smart.  It had all my critical calls for the game on one sheet of paper. So on Friday night, I pull it out. We were receiving the kickoff, so I had to get going. I couldn’t read it! I forgot my reading glasses. I was lost! Brutal. The print was too small. Thank goodness, my other coaches had great eyesight. We did win the game in spite of me. =)

Talk soon….Jim
