Go Tigers

Just finished watching the LSU game. So proud of Dave Aranda and those Tigers. It will be fun watching that LSU defense and offense in the playoffs. There were some unbelievable catches made by TE’s today in all the games……Kinda reminded me of some of the Terriers we had over the years. I have always been a TE guy. With the whole move of offenses to the spread, the TE has become a lost position. I believed you were better off with the TE attached because it made the defense hunker down an OLBer over him and most defenses couldn’t match up well.

The first TE I remember that made a big impact was Sam Mineo. He also was our kicker for KO. Back when Sam was our guy we were a Wing T offense. The TE is a critical component. He’s got to be a big blocker for us and run routes, esp. the drag on play action pass. Sam was a gifted athlete. In fact he received a full Scholarship to UNLV for football. His down block was devastating.

Another big athlete we had at TE was Mike Ballou. Mike swam on the RHS swim team as well as play FB. He didn’t block as well as Sam but he ran great routes and was a big target. Mike had an interesting entertainment act during his rookie show as a sophomore. I’m not going to comment on it….but it really stood out.

Austin Williams was one of my favorites. He played baseball as well. In fact he ended up at U of R and played baseball for the Bulldogs. Austin was a big physical guy that could do it all. He had great hands and made incredible catches for us and his yards after contact were huge. He was a great target in the red zone.

All these guys were Captains as well.

I’ll Give you a few more TE’s in my next blog….Talk soon….Jim
